Teens and TechnologyThe Pew Research group recently did a survey on teenagers use of technology. There were several striking aspects to this survey. A few of the more interesting aspects are listed below:
The use of media and technology is not going to go away anytime soon. The internet is a wonderful tool, but it is still just that--a tool. Just like a steak knife, screwdriver, or power saw. You would not give your teen a saw without showing them how to use it. Nor would you give them the keys to the car without making sure they know how drive. Our job as parents is to teach our children how to navigate the world effectively, and we must therefore educate them how to do so. One of the major factors in teaching teens about technology is helping them understand wise usage; in particularly, nothing that is sent over IM, text, or email, is ever guaranteed to be private. There are consequences to our behavior, and our online behavior is included in this. Those consequences can be long-term and far-reaching. As we seek to educate our youth we need to walk with them in the wilderness. This article gives some tips about helping your youth navigate this storm. |
